PENNLIVE.COM - Gas Station Kitchen + Bar to open in Hummelstown

By SUE GLEITER, The Patriot-News

February 02, 2010, 1:32PM

Fill ‘er up — the long awaited Gas Station Kitchen + Bar at 288 E. Main St. will open for dinner Saturday at the former Al Mediterraneo in Hummelstown. The gastropub, basically a casual pub serving upscale food, takes a completely different approach than its predecessor.

“The vibe is going to be busy, friendly, not quiet. Al Mediterraneo was quiet and subdued. This is gong to be the complete opposite,” said Stuart Delves, manager.

The economy and the fact that diners are patronizing fine-dining establishments less prompted owner Antonio Amato’s decision in November to shut the 15-year-old Italian restaurant’s doors.

“It has been tough around the area for a while. The dinner-only restaurant became more of a special occasion place. You can’t make a living from special occasions” he told me.

And, so was born the two-level casual Gas Station, which borrows its name from a former gas station along East Main Street and was converted into Al Mediterraneo.

“It’s kind of industrial and cool. There are subtle little things to tell you it’s an old gas station,” Delves said.

Beer is poured from a dispenser fashioned out of an old style gas station pump and the menu covers were created out of sanded down old license plates. Diners will take a seat at benches upholstered to resemble old car seats.

As for the menu, chef Larry Nauman has focused on inexpensive American cuisine such as pulled pork sandwiches, flat iron steaks and fish and chips. Diners will select from starters such as deviled eggs, spicy nuts and a truffled popcorn with rosemary and parmesan. Four types of pizzas will be available along with a chicken and sausage gumbo.

Daily plates take the place of specials and include meat loaf on Mondays and chicken and waffles on Tuesdays. Prices will range from $9 to $10 with the most inexpensive item, the full rack of baby back ribs, priced at $21.

The Gas Station will roll out live music on weekends starting with the Rye Bread Band on Saturday. They also plan food and drink specials for Sunday’s Super Bowl. Viewing should be prime with seven televisions in the house including a 100-inch high definition projection screen.

Hours: 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday11:30 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday. Bar is open until 2 a.m. daily. Phone: 717-566-5086.
